Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has avoided suspension after the club successfully appealed his red card from Sunday’s loss to Tottenham.
The 30-year-old received a straight red for a foul on Spurs midfielder James Maddison and would have faced a three-match ban for serious foul play. However, United argued that the sending-off was unjustified, and Fernandes is now eligible for upcoming Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham.
Fernandes was sent off in the 42nd minute while United were trailing 1-0, ultimately losing the match 3-0, marking their third league defeat of the season. The incident occurred when Fernandes slipped and caught Maddison halfway up his shin as he attempted to pass.
"Never a red card—that's my view," Fernandes stated after the game on BBC Match of the Day. "I agree it was a foul, but the referee claimed it was clear contact with the studs. I didn’t touch him with my studs or foot; it was my ankle. If he wants to give me a yellow for a potential counter-attack, I agree, but anything more than that is not justified."
United's next match is against Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by a league clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.
